It's Sale time

It's that time of year to have a sort out of craft supplies and handmade items. I am very keen to find new and forever homes for my handmade items and to make room for new ones in the new year, so I have created a sale section in my Etsy shop and moved selected items to it. There is 50% off everything in the sale which is running from now through to January 31st 2016, use coupon code JANSALE50 at checkout.

Busy Wednesday

I was a busy little bee yesterday, I had the day off work to prepare for my upcoming Fairs. I made scented votive candles and wax tarts in the following scents:

Gingerbread House
Mulled Wine
Peppermint candy cane

I will be doing apple cinnamon at the weekend. I haven't made loads, just 8 votive of each scent and 5 wax tarts, one for sniffing and 4 to pair up. I have packaged them in small cellophane bags tied with homespun fabric. The votive candles will be £1.50 each and the wax tarts will be £1.50 for 2.

These will be for sale at my upcoming craft fairs.

I prepared some flexi frames I got from my friend Christine for cross stitch, as they are green and red I thought they would make the perfect tree decoration. These too will be for sale at my upcoming fairs. I haven't used all the frames so if you would like to commission a personalised one do let me know as soon as possible.

I have been packing my bags full of goodies for the Christmas Fayre at work on Wednesday December 2nd and I am getting very excited. We plan to decorate the room and play Christmas tunes to get everyone in the mood ;o). I look forward to seeing all my lovely friends and customers there.

I will be having 'Show Specials' at both fairs, I will be bringing along my wooden Rudolph the Reindeer price £24.95, he will be on offer for £15 and my tea towel racks price £25.95 will also be on offer for £15. There will be other 'Specials' too so do pop along an see me.

It's that time of year...

... folks where I am busy preparing for my upcoming Christmas Fayres.

I will be busy making scented candles, creating Christmas/Yule cross stitch items to sell, pot pourri and maybe some signs.

I will be attending 2 this year, one at work on December 2nd (which I organise) and The Burnham Festive Fayre on staurday December 5th. It is an open air event held in the High Street, Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex; from 2:30 pm to 6:30 pm.

It will be my 4th year at the fair and it has always been worthwhile doing. It is well attended and has a great atmosphere. We have also been very lucky with the weather, cold but dry; so let's hope that luck continues this year.

I am taking a spot in one of the lit marquees this year as I did last year. The first 2 years I attended I had a separate pitch with my own gazebo, but that was a lot of work for me on my own and very difficult to light as there is no electricity supplied.

Here are some photo's of my stall.

2013 in gazebo.

These were all taken before it got dark!!!

So if you're looking for a great Christmas Fair to go to, this is the one. Come and see me!!!

Yay a sale and big news about my day job...

I get so excited when I receive an order through my Etsy shop. And I got one yesterday, which has now been taken to the Post Office, by my hubby.

We were told yesterday that the building in which I work in, in Southend-on-Sea Essex will be closing in 2019/20 and the work moving to Stratford Essex. I don't really want to commute to Stratford so I have 3 to 4 years to get my craft business to a level where it is bringing in money to live on rather than the odd sale on Etsy and a few craft fairs a year. What I have earned per year over the last few years needs to be monthly if not weekly. So I shall be looking at ways to attract more sales.

I have made a start by using the promotion tool on Etsy, I have had lots of views but no sales as yet. I have had my items favourite by lots of people but as yet no sales that way either. I belong to a few groups on Facebook for selling crafts so I shall be posting on there more often.

My latest offer on Etsy is free p&p in the UK on my keepsake boxes and tea towel racks. The offer  runs for this weekend only, so please check them out.

Happy Friday 13th

Busy Weekend

I got myself organised this weekend. I made a plan to get housework done so I could get out in the cabin and get on with some crafting jobs; and I did it!

After sorting out the cabin post new chest of drawers I made some cinnamon apple soy candles (now listed in my Etsy shop. Primitive country pot pourri made using all natural ingredients that our ancestors would have used to scent their home through the winter months. I've yet to photograph it and put in my Etsy shop.

I have also packaged up my fabric covered candy canes to try and sell them as packs of 3, 4, 5 or 6 instead of singles. If it doesn't work then I'll go back to singles.

I have 2 Christmas Fayres coming up, December 2nd at my work (organised by me) and the Burnham Festive Fayre December 5th; so I'll be busy making more items for them, I'll keep you posted.

Blessed be

Mammograms and Cobwebs

I had my first mammogram today, and I have to say it wasn't as bad I'd imagined it would be.
I was in and out very quickly. I was told that it is customary after the first one to be called back for another as they have nothing to compare it with at this stage.

And cobwebs... I took these yesterday....

Sipping on hot French vanilla coffee...

...and wondering what to do with my next with my current project. You see I had purchased quite some time ago some cute garden angel fabric panels, the image measures 51/2 inches square. I thought about make large cushions out of them having 4 different images per cushion, but in the decided to cut them all individually and make up potpourri sachets with ribbons to hang them with.

I have completed quite a few but now I'm not sure whether to do the rest as potpourri sachets or to stuff them and make them into little pillows that can be tucked in various places in your home.

This is where I need your help. I'd like you to give me your thoughts on what to do. Here are a couple of photo's, one of a completed potpourri sachet and one waiting to be finished.

I look forward to hearing your suggestions.

Just starting a new project....

I bought some patterns fro Lori at Not Forgotten Farm and this is a free hand cross stitch pattern I am working on an antimacassar I bought from a charity shop. I bought 3 of them they weren't a set so they weren't usable in the traditional sense so I thought I'd use them for cross stitch and embroidery. The other 2 I have tea dyed, see my earlier post here.

This shows the fabric as being lighter in colour than it actually is

This is closer

i'll share with you when it is completed.

Tea dying fabric...

I have quite a bit of fabric that I want to use for my cross stitch designs and embroidery designs. I have seen on many blogs about dying the fabric with walnut dye, I would love to do this but I don't have any black walnuts, so I decided that teabags will have to do.

Fabrics to be dyed

This linen is a goldy yellow colour

fabric in bowl

teabags in bowl of boiling water to infuse

fabric out to dry

dyed fabric
The tea dye isn't too strong in colour, you can make it stronger but adding more teabags.

this is the goldy yellow colour fabric, the tea dye has toned down the yellowness of it.

I added a couple of cinnamon and mango herbal teabags to the mix for scent.

I will iron the fabric that needs ironing and cut the larger pieces into fat quarters, a more manageable size. I don't want to cut them any smaller as I don't know the size if the project I will use them for yet.

bye for now

Garlic and onion harvest and beets on the way...

Last weekend we harvested our garlic, I had never grown it before and though there was plenty of foliage to be seen....

Garlic on the right this was quite early on.

I didn't know if there was anything going on in the earth. so with some trepidation hubby pushed the fork in and slowing lifted the earth; and surprise, surprise up came lots of garlic bulbs. Some are quite small but that doesn't matter. Here they are drying off....

You can see in the top photo on the left the foliage of the red onions. These were amazing, they didn't grow particularly large but the just grew out of the ground almost harvesting themselves he he. Like the garlic we had not grown onions before but we will be again this year.

The onion and garlic sets are planted in the fall and harvested in July the following year. The main draw back to this is space. I only have the patch of ground they were for growing outside (other than containers) so they do delay the planting of my butternut squash plants. Still this weekend we will (or I should say hubby) will be digging this tiny patch of earth over and digging some nutrient rich earth and I will get the squash plants and my final 2 sweet corn plants planted.

And finally, my beets. they are growing in the greenhouse and one side the leaves are enormous, while I was in the greenhouse tying up my tomato plants I noticed that some of the beets are showing above the ground, they are not as big as I thought they might be going the leaves but it might not be time to lift them yet. I will check my growing vegetables book.

I will share my beet harvest soon.

Finally finished...

I am so pleased to share with you all that I have finished my first hooked rug.

I am running a competition on my Facebook page to name the pattern which I plan to sell in my Etsy shop.

This has inspired me to design and make more rugs, but I also have some patterns from Not Forgotten Farm that I am looking forward to making. As I am not finding it very easy to get wool fabric for rug hooking I will probably make them using t-shirts, like my rug.

I do have a largish piece of green wool fabric that I want to cut up and over dye pieces. I would like to use natural dyes so I shall be investigating recipes. I will let you know how I get on.

Nearly there...

Ok, I've finished cutting my t-shirts into strips and have wound them onto the wooden spools...

I watched a You Tube video of a lady who was cutting t-shirts for braided rugs and I thought I use that idea for a quicker way for cutting my strips...

By folding the fabric in half, then half again

Always clean your mat after each t-shirt as they leave a mess behind that will transfer to your next t-shirt, which in itself isn't a major problem but it just gives you extra work so it's easier to clean as you go and while the mat is drying you can (as I did) wind your strips onto your spools.

What a lovely array of colours and they look so cool on the spools.

This is the hook I will be using from Fred Aldous

Before transferring the design I stitched a zigzag stitch around the edge so the fabric wouldn't un weave while I was working.

Then it was transferring onto my jute fabric backing ( cheap one from The Works as this is my first rug and lesson). I don't seem to be able to get hold of red dot transfer fabric in the UK, so I had to improvise using tracing paper.....

Then it was a case of transferring my design from my note book with a sharpie pen...

I made holes with a hole punch first, which wasn't that successful, so I followed the lines of the design and punched holes using a large needle; the batting was something soft to work on so the needle went through the paper.

Here is the design on the fabric. following instruction I found on beginners rug hooking, I don't have the link today but I will find it again and share it with you all. I stitch along the  rectangular outline and then a second stitch line a 1/4 inch outside of that....

The stitching is difficult to see in the photo as the thread is a similar colour. This stitching helps stabilise the fabric when you put it in your frame.

Now I am ready to hook, come back soon to see my work in progress...

Housework can wait...

I have decided that after many days and weeks of cold weather and working in the garden, the one day of gorgeousness will not be spent indoors doing housework.

So here I am sitting out on the decking enjoying a lovely cup of hazelnut cinnamon coffee and about to write a proposal for creating a craft club at work.

My view from the decking
laptop, proposal notes & coffee

The idea will be to get like minded folks together to  chat, share and work on projects. It will also be open to people who want to learn a craft, especially if retirement is looming and they want a hobby. We will also do presentations and demonstrations as well as classes.

I still have the idea to hold small classes at home. I will see how the ones at work go first.

Oh and in case anyone is wondering what the fluffy duster is for, it was to get rid of the cobwebs on the seat ;o).

Blessings

Craft Fayre Success & Craft Club in the making...

The Craft Fayre I organise at my place of work which took place on June 18th during the lunch period, was a great success. I don’t think we had as many folks through the door as we have in the past but I still had some great sales. Unfortunately though I took my camera I forgot to take some photos, what a der brain I am!!!

I have also been in discussions with someone to set up a Craft Club that people can attend in their lunch break, to meet like-minded people and to work on their works in progress.  We will also organise talks, demonstrations and classes. My next step it to write the proposal to get the go ahead.

Rug hooking materials...

I have wanted to learn rug hooking for a while now and to design my own patterns.
I also want to use old cloths to hook with. I have found it difficult to find wool cloths in the charity shops so I thought I would try t-shirts.
I bought this pile from a charity shop
muted colours in stripes & floral

And cut them into strips

Then wound them onto some wooden spools I purchased many years ago and not got around to using in a craft project.
I have drawn my first design and I have some patterns coming from Lori of Not Forgotten Farm.
I haven’t cut all the t-shirts yet so when I have I will hook my design.
I will be back to let you know how I get on.
